There are truly no second chances when it comes to making a good first impression. A job seeker’s primary goal is to impress an interviewer enough to get a second meeting. Very few companies hire on the first interview so it is important that you make that great first impression right from the start. Here are some things you may want to consider if you haven’t been getting calls back from your interviews.

Review your appearance.

While casual attire is common in the workplace it is still advisable to dress professionally when interviewing. You don’t have to wear a suit to look the part. Women can wear tailored skirts or slacks and button down shirt. Men can leave the jacket at home but not the tie. Hygiene is also extremely important. Ensure that everything from your clothes to your hair and nails are impeccably clean. Also, avoid perfume so you don’t negatively affect anyone with allergies.

Change your attitude.

One of the biggest red flags when it comes to interviews is a negative attitude. People demonstrate this in a number of ways such as saying bad things about former employers or discussing their desperation to find a job. Employers are looking for positive people to contribute to their business and be a company representative.

Use better words.

Words like “people person” and “multi-tasker” don’t actually mean anything. Overusing them will make you sound insincere rather than professional. Instead, use examples to get the point across to the interviewer about the ways you can contribute to their company. Some people even suggest tapping into storytelling techniques to better connect with the hiring manager.

Know the difference between confidence and arrogance.

There is a very fine line between these two things, so make sure you don’t cross it. Companies are looking for professionals who are confident in their abilities, but they will quickly avoid a person who comes across as arrogant. Know that there are always improvements you can make and lessons you can learn. Don’t be aggressive or pushy.
