As summer winds down, we all look forward to the cooler temperatures and warm embrace of a comfortable sweater. One aspect worth another look is your hiring process. Here are five tips to help you improve your hiring process this autumn.

  1. Build your brand.

    More and more, branding is becoming the most talked about factor for businesses to focus on. Branding is what sets you apart from your competition. It’s what allows people, customers and candidates alike to recognize your company’s personality online and within the community.

  2. Focus on communications.

    Throughout the hiring process, you need to ensure you are up to date with communication. Every step needs to be spelled out. This should be standard wording in your online application as well as explicit verbal instructions throughout the process.

  3. Review your online application.

    When it comes to your online application, make sure it is easy to navigate. Even qualified candidates often abandon online applications when they’re too complicated. It may help to have an expert take a look at what you’re doing online to encourage applicants to apply.

  4. Streamline your interviews.

    Interviews should also be revalued. Far too often, hiring managers make emotional decisions based simply on how well they like someone in the moment, but that may not be the best way to evaluate the culture fit of a new employee. Instead, create standardized interviews, so you can compare apples to apples to make your hiring decision.

  5. Follow up.

    We can’t stress communication enough, which is why we have mentioned it before and why we are making it clear that following up is critical to your process. Even the applicants that do not get the job should receive some follow-up from your company. You never know when someone you’ve met with in the past can become your next great employee.
