College graduates have been hearing a lot of bad press about the job market lately, but is it really all doom and gloom? Millennials don’t actually have to worry as much about their career prospects as they’ve been lead to believe. There will still be challenges, of course, but the overall outlook may be better than has been promoted.

As it turns out, the class of 2015 is seeing an over 5% increase in the average, entry level salary than grads from last year. This may also be good news for rising seniors who will be graduating in 2016 or 2017. Let’s take a closer look at the numbers.

Information Technology and Computer Science

The average income for someone within the field of IT is around $73,000. Recent college grads can determine if they want to specialize in a variety of information technology career paths, such as programming or information security, or they can be more general and approach their job search from a variety of aspects. Continuing a degree in computer science is still one of the best ways to get a great job after college.

Engineering Degrees

Another STEM career, engineering, is looking at salaries of $67,000 on average. As with IT, universities are also encouraging more young women to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Engineering has a wide array of applications from the automotive industry to robotics and electronics. If you like to know how things work, this is a great career path.

Liberal Arts Education

Covering an even broader spectrum of careers, liberal arts based jobs are seeking an average salary of $65,000 per year. So don’t worry when your parents complain that your English Lit degree won’t get you a job. There are a variety of lucrative careers you can get with a liberal arts degree. In fact, many businesses just want a bachelor’s in any field. Possibilities include recruiting, government, project management, and more.

Business Degrees, Prior to MBA

Many business majors go on to get their MBA, but while you’re working your way toward your graduate degree you can expect an annual salary of around $56,000 each year. Business degrees can offer you a foot in the door for a variety of management position or even accounting or finance. If you’ve thought that this would be a practical avenue for you, you may be right.

Social Sciences

If you’re an economics, sociology, or polysci major you may be looking at a starting salary of $48,000 on average. While it may seem like academia is the best career path for you, and for many people it will be, but there is so much more to the social sciences that you might imagine. An economy major may have a future as a financial planner. Political science can open the doors to legal careers. And sociology is a natural segue to investigative and criminal justice work.
